We have an AMD 1.3 G (Select 1300) with WIn 98SE originally installed. 40 GB
HD partitioned into 3 (C, D, E) 'drives'. Installed Win XP on E and made E
NTFS, but kept C & D as FAT32. Any problems running programs from C & E
using Win XP, or does everything have to be on the NTFS part? As an aside,
I'm trying to get Lego Star Wars to work on this machine with a Radeon 9800
Pro 128 MB video card. THis game required XP so we run it from this, but
keep getting lockups with an error about VPU recovery because the 3D drivers
failed to do something. Any ideas why this setup isn't working? Is the dual
boot idea too much?

Generally, there is no problem running programs from a FAT32 partition
while running WinXP from a NTFS drive. However, some unpatched versions
of some programs had problems (Nero Vision Express for example). As for
your VPU recovery errors, that is most likely a problem with the
drivers. If you haven't upgraded them, do so.

Thanks. Unfortunately, had the latest catalyst drivers (5.7) and didn't work
either. The card works fine in my AMD 64 machine.

Have you tried the latest VIA drivers from www.viaarena.com ? The other
issue may be that the video card isn't getting enough juice from the power
supply.

yes, had the latest chipset drivers installed then reloaded ati drivers.
Still crashes. Power supply is 350 watts which is what ati says is the
minimum. You'd think it would work by now. Thanks.

While the PS may technically meet the minimum, cheap ones often cannot
provide a sustained output. Try your other supply and see if that
fixes the problem.

Found the answer! Had to set AGP fast writes to disable. Why this is no one
knows but it was one of many suggestions on other forums (along with a
million other things to try which took this long) so it's some compatibility
issue.
Now I have a cool gaming machine!
