Good time to purchase?

Forum General UK & Ireland Discussions : Good time to purchase?

Is this a good time to purchase and build a new computer, or are price gonna significantly drop soon.

And also, is this a good deal for an i5 upgrade pack: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=578888
Is the motherboard good, etc.

Or would it be better to buy this Phenom II 956 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=518692
Which is actually cheaper on Komplette.com than the Phenom II x4 955.

Main interest is gaming. Need to be able to play TF2 at a hight fps and also be able to play Starcraft 2/Bioshock 2 with high fps/High graphics.

Thanks in advance.

Yep now is a good time. A lot of financial advisors (although their job is pretty much speculation based on crap anyway) are saying that manufacturing costs are going to go up now that people are getting over the slump, and with the i5 i3 and i7 out, quad core and dual core chips are getting cheaper. So its definitely a good time.

the i5 is a good enough deal, but it depends on what you want. What system have you got now though, because maybe just a ram and GPU upgrade would be better spent. If I were you I'd have a look on a few of the comparisons in performance here (www.tomshardware.co.uk) (www.reghardware.co.uk) (http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/) (http://www.tweaktown.com/) You're bound to find a comparison of performance on those in there some where. Also the i5 750 will perform better than the listed clock speed as it's should have Turbo Boost on it (ie when only 2 cores are working it'll work harder on those two cores and similar with 1 core working harder because of the heat threshold) look it up on the intel site. It's also a more efficient architecture than the Phenom. (I dont work for intel by the way I just think that the i5 and i7 have a better architecture system than the phenom which really only compares to the core2quad).

Worth waiting a couple of weeks to see what happens with Fermi for a GPU upgrade, but besides that, yes. As stated prices could be on the rise.

What've you all got against Fermi? If it wasn't for him then nuclear power would only be usable to obliterate cities, insurrectionists, inconvenient political opponents, small mountains, and people who fidget during the sermon.

Seriously, Enrico Fermi was a good man. Pity the Manhattan project overshadowed the development of safe and usable nuclear energy.
