can my system handle Battlefield 3 on the lowest possible settings?? if not, what things should i upgrade to make games like these to run on the lowest possible settings?

Change ur mobo to one with a LGA 1155 socket.
At least get a core i3-2100. (This is for optimum gaming experience).
Get a GDDR5 video card.
Have at least 4GB RAM.
Get at least 500W PSU.
Windows 7 is a must to run BF3. (x64 bit of course).

It would be more cost effective for you to get a xbox 360 or ps3. its $300 vs a new rig which would run you 600-1500

No, they're not similar at all.

You're going to have to upgrade your motherboard, CPU, GPU, memory and power supply to be able to play BF3.

Before anyone can give you advice we need to know your budget.

$200 is not enough. You will be better off buying a console.

As the others said, you need a powerful PC to play BF3..even on low settings. Note that if you were to play it on a poor PC and get it running yo would simply get destroyed online as your visuals would be miles below what everyone else is using to play the game.
Bottom line is that high-end PC gaming is an expensive hobby while console gaming isn't so much.
BF3 on the OPS3 is not at all as good as on the PC but you get what you pay for and they target different markets.
