Start/Control Panel/Network connections/Lan/properties/advanced/uncheck
the firewall and restart.

Is that the SP1 or SP2 firewall?

With SP1 firewall enabled on LAN interface, I could strangely access
internet without any problems (through router on LAN), but it blocked
access to my LAN print server (including http access of print server
config). Its pfirewall.log showed it was dropping LAN replies. So I had
to disable XP's firewall.

When I installed SP2, which enabled its firewall by default, I had no
trouble at all with it, local or internet.

At work, we had no trouble at all with either firewall. Other posts have
mentioned the opposite of my experience, where they had problems with XP's
firewall "after" upgrading to SP2. 3rd party firewalls have also been
known to result in connection or DHCP problems, sometimes even if
deactivated, but still installed.

I had the problem without sp2. Not sure if the problem would happen
with sp2. But I did upgrade to sp2 after finishing and got internet
access right away. I did notice however just to add that I needed to
goto

internet options in ie/connections/setup to get back online again after
switching out towers. I guess getting online with cable is a senitive
thing.

Would be nice if microsoft gave options to things that could mess us up
if we don't know about it while installing new things. But the sp2
anyway gave me the option to change the firewall setting even though it
was set to on right away which is not right again if you don't know
what you are doing which is most people I notice.
