Planet Doom is reporting that D3 will only run on Windows 2000 and XP. Huh, peeps with 98se and ME can't play? Somebody tell me this isn't true.

BTW, did THG undergo some changes? The fonts are different and I don't like it. I didn't change it, what happened?

what is strange is, that the alpha ran in win98se.

maybe it is because of the copy protection of the cd.

"what is strange is, that the alpha ran in win98se."

Yeah, that is strange. Also 29% of consumers run 98 versus 38% for XP. Rounding up, that's a 45%/55% split. Why disenfranchise 45% of consumers?

Perhaps "no support" just means no tech calls or game patches for 98se. But it'll still run it.

Let's face it... Windows 98 is on the way out. It's a hard fact of life, but exactly how long should we expect developers to keep writing drivers / software for an OS that is already 5 years old?

Every new consumer computer purchased comes with Windows XP. Future hardware will have no driver support for Win98... it's already gone for 95... so 98 won't be too far behind. Why anyone would want to build a modern computer and then 'cripple' it with 98 I'll never know. Even Windows 2000 is vastly superior.

I know it would be nice to cling to 98 for another 20 years, but my God man... let it go.

It doesn't cripple it. (See my sig) I ran a dual boot system earlier this year to check out XP. I found it to be a bloated P.O.S. with slow bootup & shut down times. Not zippy at all like 98se.

There is no speed increase to XP. It's been benched to death and proven. I can find a link if you need.

Beside gaming, I use my systems in the small biz environment. XP has no advantages there either. Sure, Sys Admin at large corps may like it. But so what, does nothing for me.

I just don't see any *up* in the upgrade, neither do a lot other people who don't buy MS marketing garbage. I'd rather spend my money on a hardware upgrade with tangible benefits.

That's in buisnesses, where an O/S upgrade can take time and ALOT of money.
Your facts are flawed, we are talking about home PC's...not office / buisness ones.
Every new PC now is being sold with XP.

No one wants to see / use Win98 anymore

You completely missed the fact that I said Windows 2000 and not XP.

Slow bootup and shutdown times? Hmmmm... 30 seconds isn't all that slow last time I checked. My work machine boots even faster... the only reason it takes as long as it does is because I have my hard drive hooked up to the Promise controller rather than the onboard and it takes a few extra seconds to scan for hard drives.

I didn't say anything about increased speed. What I have been touting is increased stability, vastly superior memory management and a much better file system.

See above. You could also 'borrow' a Windows 2000 CD and you'd still be better off than you are with 98. I'm not talking about huge increases in FPS here... I'm talking better overall stability, etc. Besides, how many FPS do you need to run a BSOD?

Again, 98 support is on it's way out. Doom 3 is the first of what I'm sure will be many titles to support 2000 / XP only. Yeah, it sucks if you don't want to change... but you have to realize that sooner or later you'll have to. Better sooner than later IMO.

Howdy Coyote
Just throwing in my 2 cents, I have my choice of running right now and have run them all, Win98SE, WinME, Win2K Pro, or WinXP Pro after running all four OP/SYS I've settled in on Win2K Pro w SP4, its just flat out the best Microsoft has to offer right now period. It runs circles around XP, does more than XP will allow, browsing and downloading, no activation crap, doesn't crash like SE does when the least little problem arises. I wouldn't be telling you this if you were running Win2K yourself, because you'd already know it. Its well worth you considering as a step up from SE in my opinion, and I respectfully say that to you. Ryan

LOL, I put 98SE on every machine I sell. That's right, every single one. I do this because it's fast and doesn't require huge amounts of RAM to run right. A 98SE system with 128MB of RAM will run circles around the same machine with XP and 256MB.

you still make systems with 128 / 256 Mb of RAM?
Average machine atm, ships with 512mb.

Given the choice, im sure the majority of people would prefer to have XP than 98...you can't even run the lastest games like Doom 3 on 98

The majority of people I deal with want the cheapest system possible, MY target price is $200! If they HAD $400 to spend, they'd buy a Dell. And when they ask about XP, I laugh at them, saying "You'll need at least 256MB to make it run right, and 512MB if you want it to perform well, buy this now and I'll upgrade you when you get more money".

MY major competitor is a local shop that builds XP systems with as little as 64MB of RAM! People come to me saying "It takes 10 minutes to boot and even then takes a lifetime to load programs". And that's when I REALLY laugh "OH, I see you bought it from THOSE guys. I'll upgrade it for you, but it's going to cost FULL PRICE, no discounts for their customers". Hehe.
