Flood of GeForce 8800 cards hit the market

Culver City (CA) - Today’s release of the Nvidia GeForce 8800 graphics benchmarks has spawned a flood of video card announcements. Card makers large and small, including BFG, PNY and XFX, have announced new 8800 GTX and the slightly more affordable GTS cards.

BFG announced a GeForce 8800 GTX PCI Express card with 768 MB of RAM and a GTS card with 640 MB of RAM. Both cards are available today and sell for $700 and $500 respectively. BFG also announced a special water-cooled GTX edition that fits in a single slot. That card will sell for $800.

PNY is selling their XLR8 GeForce 8800 GTX with 768 MB of GDDR3 memory and 575 MHz core clockspeed and a GTS with 640 MB of RAM and a 500 MHz core clock. Both cards include dual DVI and HDTV/S-Video outputs. The cards sell for $500 and $450 respectively.

Like the other video card makers, XFX is rolling out a GTX and GTS version of the GeForce 8800. The dual slot cards have similar specs as BFG’s and PNY’s cards.

Even though Nvidia says the video cards are available now, many of the larger retailers do not have any in stock. A quick search of Froogle and other shopping engines only show a handful of companies taking orders. Prices range from $450 all the way to $700.
