VIDEO: Rolling Out HP's Flexible Display

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Make way for lighter netbooks and ereaders.

The possibilities for flexible or curved displays are endless; the folks at Hardware.info recently saw one of HP's flexible screens all rolled up and stuffed in a poster tube, for example. However, those of you hoping this could lead to electronic wall hangings may be disappointed. You may be able to roll one of HP's screens tightly enough to fit inside a tube but according to HP's Chief Technology Officer, Phil McKinney, it's not something you'll be able to do time and time again without damaging the material.

Hardware.info cites McKinney as saying the screen would fail if you rolled it more than a half a dozen times. As such, HP is hoping to use the technology to offer lighter, more compact devices – like ereaders and tablets – rather than touting it as a flexible, rollable display. Check out the flexible display below. Though the clip doesn't show much in the way of a demonstration, it does show just how thin and paper-like the display is.
