The director of monitor research at Stanford Resources Inc. (SRI) says flat-panel LCD monitors are taking market share away from conventional CRT monitors. Moreover, she predicts that CRT monitor sales will turn downward in 2005 to be permanently replaced by LCDs and other monitor technologies.

In 1996, only 57,000 LCD monitors sold for $99 million compared to 60 million CRTs sold that year for $17 billion in revenues. The LCD market has grown faster in Japan than in North America or Europe, due simply to the higher value of desktop real estate. Half of all LCD sales, until recently, occurred in Japan. The year 2000 international figures will be, she estimates, 6.8 million LCD monitors compared to 105 million CRTs.
