Firefox 4.0: Browser Tabs on Top or Bottom?
It's the little things that count.
While Firefox 3.7 will bring with it some really cool hardware acceleration features, the next big, big build will be Firefox 4.0. Right now the designers are debating whether to keep the tabs on the bottom of the address bar, like it's done for Internet Explorer and Safari, or move tabs on top of the address bar, like Chrome and Opera do it.
Check out all the points for and against it in the video below. It's fascinating stuff if you spend as much of your day in the browser as we do.

Does anyone actually care.........
Not I.
FF has more pressing challenges ahead of it than the placement of its tabs. Finally coming anywhere near the speed Chrome and Opera offer for example...
I'm a bit of a UI fanatic, so I guess I do care..
We can see her top, but unless there's another picture somewhere I don't see how we can really compare the two
why not both?
Why not give us the option to choose?
I agree, choice is always better. If you do it via add-ons, it can't be that hard to bake into the browser.
This is nothing particularly new. Apple was experimenting with tabs on top in development releases of Safari years ago. They decided against it. I think it broke their own human interface guidelines.

Mighty Jobs? Mighty Jobs? Most Serene Highness of all Living Organisms Jobs is the most modest acceptable title. On less formal occasions simply Lord of the Universe will do though.
Leave that to the users, will you?
Why not give us the option to choose?
Watch the video and you'd know that this isn't about choice, they said they were giving us choice. It's about the DEFAULT setting. We can't _choose_ that.

You. Read my previous paragraphy.
Bleh, ignorance.

Also, as a web developer, and having an interest in UI, I care. I personally prefer tabs on top. Tabs on bottom seems bulky and ugly as sin.
It's why I've liked Opera and Chrome for a long time running.

No NEED to be snarky. ALL they have to do is give you a screen when you install that shows a picture of each option and a tick box to select _your_PREFERED_ option.

And for the millions of people who will just click "next" and ignore it, which will be the default option?
One ALWAYS must pick a default for their users.
Yeah but the sort of users that stick with the default settings tend to be the people still using IE or AOL because that was what was installed, or it's their ISP, and they don't download the browser selection update because it would force them to make a decision they'd rather avoid 'in case they get it wrong'.
You can choose where to have the tabs. Right click above the awesome bar and deselect tabs on top if you want them down below.
