Fibre Channel over Ethernet standard proposed
San Diego (CA) - Nine IT companies, including Cisco, IBM, Intel and Sun, have asked the T11 Committee of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to create a Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) standard.
The standard proposes to transport SAN traffic natively over Ethernet networks. If approved, FCoE would provide Ethernet users with a "more pervasive connectivity" in the data center, the submission claims. Promised user benefits would include lower longer term operation costs via consolidated connectivity and management, additional server connectivity options as well as improved reliability, latency and performance for storage and "broader" data center connectivity, according to a statement released on Friday.
The group proposing FCoE includes Brocade, Cisco, EMC, Emulex, IBM, Intel, Nuova, QLogic, and Sun Microsystems.
