Nvidia's Future GPUs Will Be Kepler, Then Maxwell
These are the next baby names for GPUs.
Right now, the Fermi technology is the best that Nvidia is shipping. You can expect to see an ever-growing family of Fermi-based GPUs to be joining the latest GTX 480, GTS 460 and 450 models.
What's beyond Fermi? Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang today revealed that it'll be "Kepler".
Kepler will be hitting production later this year, with the first GPU products based on it to be going on sale in 2011. Kepler will be made off the 28nm process, and will be focused far more heavily on performance per watt than Fermi is.
Nvidia estimates that Kepler will be three to four times the performance per watt over Fermi, giving us a ballpark of five gigaflops of per watt.
And after Kepler, reaching into 2013, will be "Maxwell", which should bring 16 times the performance in parallel graphics-based computing, as well as the ability to work independent of a CPU. Performance per watt will triple over the previous generation, hopefully hitting 15 gigaflops per watt.

If Kepler's specs are real, which I doubt give it being such an early announcement designed only to create a hype, performance per watt might come close to ATI's. We'll see...
Nvidia's recored in power consumption have always been high with their new gpus so i wont be expecting many power saving features especialy with this X16 performance per watt. Someones heads in the clouds me think.

Agree, this is just to keep Nvidias stocks high and sharehodlers happy.
By the way, i'm not loyal to AMD or Nvidia but i can tell when Nvidia are up to their usual PR tricks.

Seriously, even Nvidia isn't too stupid to learn from their mistakes. They found out the hard way times have changed and they can't just offer performance no matter the power draw or cooling issues. Believe me, their next generation will use less power.
My only question is if they will be able to implement enough power saving and increase performance to become competitive with ATI again. There's lot of room for improvement, but there's only so much power efficiency you can squeeze out of an architecture. Maybe it's time to come up with a totally different architecture, rather than just a variant on an existing architecture like you did the past few generations?

I watched the live stream. That chart looks goddamn impressive, in just two-three years they expect the cards to be over 7 times more powerful than the fermi!?
The most impressive part of the stream for me was iRay. I only 3D model on a hobby level, but that was damn impressive.

Anyone know what nm the ATI 6xxx series is manufactured at? since Nvidia is going for 28nm, and ATI 5xxx is 40nm, I'd assume 6xxx is 32nm. But how can AMD use that process on their GPUs when they can't do it on their CPUs? Am I missing something here?? Can someone more knowledgeable about processors enlighten this idiot!

@Dandalf, can't help you i'm afraid, i dont know the reasoning behind their strategy, or what die shrinkage plans they have for the future, probably best to ask them ^.^
