Federal Gov't to test Emergency Health Notification System with PDAs

by - source: Tom's Hardware

The U.S. Department of Health and Humans Services has announced a new pilot initiative for the private medical sector that will test the use of Personal Data Assistants (PDAs) as a quick and effective communication tool for physicians and other emergency clinical staff in the event of a biological attack. The Department said it will test a system that uses the private sector eProcates network to send test messages to up to 700,000 clinicians, including 250,000 doctors, to evaluate how quickly they download urgent information and whether they find it the PDA notification helpful and useful. The test message will contain information regarding the threat level of various biological agents, such as anthrax, botulism, plague, smallpox and others. It will also include Web links for treatment and diagnosis of exposure as well as the ability to download and save the Web information to the PDA.
