FDA OKs tests of electronic hearts
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved requests from two companies to test the first completely artificial hearts to be implanted in human beings. As early as July, mechanical lithium battery-powered hearts controlled by microprocessors that adjust the machines' functioning to the physiological needs of the recipients will be implanted in a few of the tens of thousands of people who need replacements for their own failing organs every year. Early successful tests were performed on calves.
