FCC Re-Examines Bell Disclosure Rules

If your local telephone company sells you long distance service in addition to local service, should it be allowed to mix the figures from the two businesses in one set of books? And if so, should it have to file those figures with the communications regulators?

Today, local exchange carriers, namely the Bell Operating Companies, can sell long distance service to their local customers in 41 states and the District of Columbia. However, they had to win the Federal Communications Commission's approval to do so, and for at least three years from the date of that approval they can sell the long distance services only through a separate affiliate.
