YES you can.

However, just like any other sophisticated program, even Windows 8/Windows 8.1 has been designed to use the wallpapers on the lock screen that best fit the screen size. In other words, as per Windows 8/Windows 8.1 default configuration, only the photographs that are able to best fit the screen are used as the lock screen images.

If you want to change the size of the lock screen photograph, you need to take a workaround in which you can copy any existing lock image and save it as a different name. After this you can change the resolution and size of the copied image, configure Windows 8/Windows 8.1 accordingly, and can then use the modified image as the lock screen photograph.

Apart from the above, you can also choose any photograph of your choice to use it as the lock screen image, but you must configure the Windows 8/Windows 8.1 to accept the photographs that even do not fit the screen size.

Considering the above, one thing is common that you are required to configure Windows 8/Windows 8.1 computer to accept the images of different size as lock screen photographs. This configuration must be made manually, and the process of making the configuration is given below:

  • Log on to the Windows 8/Windows 8.1 computer. (Using an administrator account would be preferable.)
  • Once you are on the Start screen, hover mouse to the bottom right corner of the window.
  • From the displayed Charms bar, click Settings.
  • On the opened Settings pane in the right, click Change PC settings from the bottom.
  • On the opened PC settings window, from the left pane, click the PC and devices category.
  • From the right pane, under the Play a slide show on the lock screen section, move the switch to the right in order to turn the feature on.
  • From the displayed extended options, turn off the Only use the pictures that will fit best on my screen option by moving its corresponding switch to the left.
  • Once this is done, you can locate and choose the images of different sizes by clicking the Browse button.
  • Finally, you can close the opened window and boxes, and you can log off from the currently logged on user account to check the modifications on the lock screen.
