Everest Base Camp Internet Café Planned
A Nepali Sherpa hopes to establish the world's first Internet Café at Mt. Everest's base camp. It will also be the world's highest Cyber café at 17,400 feet. This Cyber Sherpa, Tsering Gyaltsen, happens to be the grandson of the first Sherpa who led Sir Edmund Hillary to the summit of Mt. Everest (at 29,040 feet) 50 years ago this year. Since the nearest telephone to Everest's base camp is more than four days' hike away, the Cyber Café will be a beneficial communication tool for trekkers and mountain climbers wanting to stay in touch with family and friends. The Cyber Café will be powered by solar and gasoline generator and rely on radio and satellite links for transmission. Gyaltsen wants to have the café open by March in order to capitalize on the large number of tourists that are anticipated at base camp to commemorate Edmund Hilary's historic climb up Everest. Gyaltsen reportedly plans to use monies that collected from the café for clean up of the tons of garbage that are deposited and left at Everest every year.
