Embedded chips gain prominence
One trend, noted by analysts, at the Microprocessor Forum was the increased attention given to embedded processors. Unlike the general purpose x86-based central processors that have traditionally held the spotlight, embedded processors are designed for specific purposes including game consoles, PDAs, wireless telephones, automobile brake system, watches and so forth. As convergence has increased the demands on these systems, they have come to resemble, more and more, their more respected CPU relatives. This fact raises the possibility that smaller, embedded manufacturers may find themselves in more direct competition with the likes of Intel and AMD.
