Elantec's Programmable Buffer for TFT-LCDs

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Anything that might make LCD displays cheaper is OK in my book, and Elantec is now producing a programmable reference generator for gamma voltage generation that it says can do just that. The company claims that by replacing the current buffer topology and resistor ladders, the EL5825C could simplify the development process, offer more flexibility and customization options, and reduce overall LCD display manufacturing costs (good thing). The EL5825C has eight reference outputs, each programmable to a 10-bit resolution. Each output can swing to either rail while maintaining a 30mA continuous output current rating. The EL5825C has an output range of up to 18V, while the input side can operate from 3V to 5V. Programmable via a three-wire serial interface, the EL5825C can be driven by a micro-controller or ASIC in a smart-panel type application, an FPGA, or by adapting the existing timing controller. The EL5825C is available in sample quantities now, with full production in December. It comes packaged in both the 24-pin LPP and the 24-pin TSSOP packages and is priced at just $2.75 in 1,000-unit quantities. Hopefully LCD builders who use the device will pass the savings on to you.
