Midnight e-filer surge causes trouble for TurboTax servers

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Mountain View (CA) - A record number of electronic tax filers brought TurboTax’s online service to a standstill last night, causing delays of up to several hours.

"The amount of filing that has been done today has been absolutely amazing, and we are doing everything we possibly can to expand capabilities of servers," said a TurboTax spokesperson. At one point, returns were being filed at the rate of 60 per second.

The backlog caused hundreds of e-filers to have submission time stamps dated April 18. TurboTax said it contacted the IRS about the situation. The government body will make a statement later today.

Meanwhile, the #2 tax software, H&R Block’s TaxCut, reported no problems with its electronic filing service last night.
