Dueling modulation schemes hinder DTV
Digital television continues to lag behind expectation. Though the high cost of receivers, lack of consistent programming and incompatible cable technologies are part of the problem, these factors would probably improve if the industry could agree on one of the two competing modulation schemes. One chipmaker, NxtWave, has responded by releasing chipsets that support both eight-level vestigial sideband (8-VSB) and coded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (COFDM) for broadcast DTV.
