For some applications, we could beat the Pentium Extreme Edition 965 with a Pentium D 805, but that wasn't good enough for our project. Thus, we took things one step further and started the system with an FSB clock rate of 205 MHz. This produces a CPU clock rate of 4.1 GHz.

It's necessary to resort to extreme measure to make this configuration work reliably, however. We increased the core voltage by about 0.338 V to 1.675 V. The memory clock rate then sat at DDR2-820, at which we could still maintain our timings at CL4.0-4-4-8.

With good memory modules - like the PQI PQI25400-1GDBL modules we used in our testing - timing values of CL4.0-4-4-8 remain viable even at DDR2-820.

The Asus motherboard let us enter a voltage setting of 1.67 V without balking...

...but as soon as we restarted the system it flashed a "CPU Overvoltage Error" message at us, just to stay on the safe side.
