As mentioned in a story here this Monday , we could see as many as 150 million connected devices in U.S. households by the end of 2005. One of the companies that hopes to get into your home to hook up your gadgets is DoBox, a provider of software for home server gateways and firewalls. On Wednesday, DoBox announced that Sunflower Cablevision in Lawrence, Kansas is conducting a field trial of the DoBox software to offer home networking capabilities to customers of Datavision, the company's broadband cable Internet access service. DoBox links computers, entertainment systems, communication devices, and "smart home systems," to each other and to a single Internet connection. Those folks out in Lawrence are pretty tech savvy, with 80 percent of the area's homes hooked up to Sunflower's cable services and 20 percent of those homes wired for the company's broadband cable Internet services. We sure could do without all the cute company names though.
