by - source: Tom's Hardware

Market research firm DisplaySearch said in a recent report that LCD televisions have overtaken CRT-based televisions on a revenue basis. The report was based on fourth quarter sales figures from 2005 : According to DisplaySearch, LCD TV shipments grew 137% versus the previous year and this is the first time that LCD revenue has beat that of CRTs.

CRT televisions still comprise the majority of shipment numbers, but dropped 15% from 2004. Consumers are on a television buying spree around the world and revenues for the whole market increased 13% when compared against 2004.

DisplaySearch says 79% of all televisions sold are still CRTs, while 15% are LCDs. Plasma and microdisplay television sets make up the remaining 5% of the market.

Sony led all manufacturers with 14% of total market revenue and an 130% quarter-on-quarter growth.
