Dirt 2 PC Demo Brings DirectX 11 Graphics

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Those with fancy video cards be proud!

Got your shiny DirectX 11-enabled Radeon HD 5800 series and you're itching to stretch its legs? Well then, the newly released demo of Dirt 2 is your best option. While Dirt 2 was released for consoles a few months ago, the wait continues for this still-unreleased PC version. The delay to the PC version was for the sake of graphical enhancements, and if you have a DX11 card, you'll be able to enjoy some of the new features.

Check out this video from Codemasters that runs through all the little enhancements afforded by this new generation of software and hardware:

We'll be including Dirt 2 as part of our regular testing suite once the full version releases, but if you want to know how the demo benches, check out tests from TweakTown and Bit-tech.

Look at http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/pc/ [...] k-dirt-2/1 and you will see that DX11 is pointless: no obvious graphics enhancements, but significant lower framerates.

dont know where you got your facts from petur but there are quite a few obvious enhancments, and the significant lower framerates in that instance isnt a bad thing if you compare that its computing a massive ammount more of information in comparrison to directx 9. besides anything over 30fps average is perfectly playable especially with all the extra processing going into the image, with that showing 48min and 60average i would say thats brilliant especially if your comparing it to directx10 at release.

The thing people seem to forget is that you can't compare like for like. You can't say DX9 Vs DX11 and then moan about the 40% drop in frame rate because the DX11 version is doing so much more work!

If DX9 were to attempt the DX11 features (which it can't) it would fall flat on it's face and I'm sure if they just used DX11 to improve performance and not visuals it would beat DX9 easily in performance!

And let's be honest, 48 minimum FPS at 1920x1200 with an average of 60fps with all the loveliness of DX11, on a 1st generation demo without being fully optimized - What the hell are you moaning about?!?

Dude, directX 10 must be optimized by microsoft, you can't optimize the game engine if it's bottlenecked by the graphics api.

I don't get what your saying?! Assuming you mean DX11 and not 10! ofc the API can be optimized - That's a definate!. It hasn't had years of development like DX9 has.

What I meant about the game being optimized is that this is the devlopers first crack and creating a game that supports DX11 and I very much doubt it has been built from the ground up using the new API. Also the review was done on a Demo which still is receiving development and improvements to the game engine.
