WoW Annual Pass Subscribers Get Diablo III for Free

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Blizzard awards its WoW subscribers with a chance to get Diablo III for free.

Ever since the release of Cataclysm, World of Warcraft has been taking quite some heat and losing a fair number of its subscribers. With Diablo III coming in the near future, Blizzard has revealed a new subscription plan that will help the company hold on to its precious subscribers.

Dubbed the World of Warcraft Annual Pass, the new subscription method will allow players to enter a 12-month subscription commitment. Luckily for players concerned with breaking their banks, the plan lets players either pay on a monthly basis at $14.99 per month or use a different billing plan of their choosing.

For current WoW subscribers, this means there won't be much of a change other than the fact that they won't be able to cancel their account for a year. The commitment could be a turn-off to some subscribers, but the rewards are definitely tempting. For a limited time, WoW Annual Pass subscribers will get a digital version of Diablo III for free, along with the new Tyrael's Charger in-game mount. In addition, subscribers will also be granted guaranteed access to the upcoming WoW Expansion Beta Test.

Seems like a cheap way to try and keep the sub numbers steady to me. Even if people aren't playing, these annual subscriptions will allow Blizzard to say "but look, we have x million active subscriptions" if any problems should arise. I hate it when company's throw the smoke over their numbers.

Looks like blizzard is getting desperate since WoW: Mists of Panderia is doomed to be the last expansion WoW will ever get due to all the negative reviews and The Old Republic and Guild Wars 2 being right around the corner.

Well, if you are a player AND were planning on getting D3 anyway it is actually a pretty good deal (assuming D3 will be $60 you are getting $180 worth of sub time for $120, less if you pay in blocks instead of monthly). Face it, as long as the game can maintain even a few hundred thousand subs it is worth it for Blizzard to keep it going monetarily speaking. Regardless of the overall sales numbers of the next expansion (which in its presentation sounded like an April Fools joke to me) the game will keep going to years to come.

This is the same idiotic drivel that people have been saying for years. Back when BC came out people kept crying about it, a lot of players then quit but they ended up getting more for it in the long run, then during Wrath this was even more so. Plus at that time you had the constant whine about changes coupled with a slew of new MMORPGs coming out ("oh [insert random failed MMORPG, i.e. age of conan, Warhammer, LotR] is going to end WoW"). WoW is pretty much here to stay, the primary reason for that is Blizzard is a business and they do what's good for business. I'm sure they've noticed the drop in their subscriptions as they had in the past and will make changes to either accommodate older subscribers or attract new ones. Even if they lose half the subscribers they have WoW will still be a billion dollar industry. The fact that they update the graphics engine each expansion keeps the game competitive and since they just adapt new features (often those "new" features are popular ones borrowed from newer MMORPGs) WoW is somewhat of an unstoppable juggernaut.
