Department of Defense Awards $26 Million Contract to SGI
As part of its program known as High Performance Computing Modernization Program, the U.S. Department of Defense has awarded SGI a contract worth $26 million over a 3½ year period. SGI sells "niche" high-end computers that are used for visually intense and complex technical tasks, such as car design, searching for oil and gas fields, and digital imagery. The Defense Department launched the High Performance Computing Modernization Program to assure that U.S. military forces have the technological edge in weapons design and in combat. SGI was also recently awarded a multimillion dollar contract from Lockheed Martin for the purchase of high-end servers that will be used to train F-16 Fighter jet pilots in the U.S. Air Force.
