Dell To Unveil New $199 Pocket PC At Comdex?
Sources indicate that Dell is planning to unveil two new Pocket PC 2002 handhelds at Comdex. The interesting thing is that one of these new devices is said to be priced at the low price at $199 which will break new ground in the market. Both devices will feature Intel Xscale processors running at 300MHz and 400MHz. The 300MHz model is said that it will retail for $199, while the 400MHz model will go for $299.
Continued speculation over Dell's pending strategy in the handheld market has intrigued many analysts with many different reports from a wide variety of OEM sources. While there seems to be a lot of support for the pricing and specifications above, nothing seems to be set in stone yet. While cheaper devices might stimulate growth in the handheld market segment, it is still unclear what role Dell will play in this strategy.
The real story here is the low price of $199 because Pocket PC 2002 devices up till this point have sold from as much as $600. With Dell moving into this space prices are going to fall which could present some real challenges for Palm devices.
