Dell Plans To Sell Machines Without An OS (IE, Windows)
Dell has apparently decided to stick to its word by listening to consumers via its Idea Storm website, taking onboard the user idea of shipping machines without a copy of Windows, or any other OS, pre-installed. This will save some money for those of us in this universe who already own a copy of Windows.
Another big suggestion in the offing is to release machines with Firefox pre-installed as the default browser ; though some might say that that’s a tad too much micro-management of features and could complicate the purchasing process if you’re truly given a bazillion and ten different configuration options. If you want Firefox, it’s a 5.5 MB download.
Dell has managed to dodge the issue of selling machines with Linux pre-installed by saying that nobody can agree on which particular flavor of Linux to ship the machine with. Ohh well, consumer choice kills consumer choice.
For the non-Windows machines, we can expect to see the option rolling out to the Latitude n-Series in the US first, and later to all Dell machines worldwide.
