Dell expands server line

Dell Computer Corp. has unveiled four new servers as well as a 32-processor architecture licensing deal with Unisys. Like many PC makers who are nervous that the growth in the PC market cannot be maintained, it is expanding into the "enterprise" server market now led by Compaq Computer Corp. The most powerful of the servers, the PowerEdge 1550, uses dual Pentium III chips and dual, independent 64-bit/66-MHz PCI Buses with 4 GBytes of RAM and 3-hot pluggable, one" SCSI hard drives that will store 108 GBytes. The company also announced plans to sell a 32-processor PowerEdge server based on the Unisys cellular MultiProcessing (CMP) server architecture.
