Dell, Compaq resume Coppermine shipments

PC makers Dell and Compaq once again are shipping computers running on Intel's Coppermine processor.

Dell cancelled shipments of its Optiplex GX 110 model after the discovery of a glitch in the latest Pentium III chip that affects the on/off function of some PCs. Officials say the company developed a test for the problem and will resume shipments today.

Compaq said it also resumed shipping the new Pentium III systems after determining that users would not be adversely affected.

Intel said it is working to repair the problem.

Coppermine is the latest version of Intel's Pentium III, launched in late October, with speeds of up to 733MHz.
