Defections cloud car bus standard

The effort to agree on a bus standard for the auto industry may have been set back this week when DaimlerChrysler, BMW and Volkswagen resigned from the important Automotive Multimedia Interface Collaboration. The three companies apparently feel their own collaboratively designed high-speed fiber-optic bus provides a better platform than anything likely to be produced by the AMI-C. The organization was formed two years ago to help the industry cope with evolution in the electronics industry that complicated the effort to implement navigation systems, CD players, digital radios, cell phones and other devices.

The three departing organizations were apparently dissatisfied with the organization's rate of progress and licensing fees. The competing bus standard organization, MOST, has done away with fees and opened their technology.
