Executive Overview
Genre Online First-Person Shooter
The plot/hook Online World War II, class-based capture point and objective based missions
Graphics Valve's Source engine, updated with High Dynamic Range (HDR) lighting. Period textures and movable objects add immersive atmosphere.
Sound & Voice Acting Sound across the board is excellent, from the muted krump of explosions in the distance, to the sharp clang of the M1 Garand's trademark en bloc clip being ejected from the rifle. Period sounds faithfully recreated.
Controls Familiar W,A,S,D FPS setup
Interface Scalable interface, with health/stamina/ammunition in the bottom left, and an optional, expandable map in the top right.
Learning curve None for players familiar with DoD. A few minutes for new players to get the basics down, and a lot of fun-filled man-hours to learn every nook and cranny of each individual map.
Mechanics Class-based online play, with riflemen, assault, support, sniper, machine gunner and rocket man. (Ohh how I love being able to fit that into a review... come on, sing it with me like we're William Shatner.) Some servers will limit the number of people who can be in each class; this is the best type of server, as you won't have a million snipers to deal with.
AI No NPCs. Intelligence of opposition varies widely...
Game Play With the summer update come two new maps, with capture-point and objective-based blow-stuff-up warfare ensuing on the rather structured maps. There are two or three routes through each, and bottlenecks all over the place.
Replay Value Plenty, until you get bored of the linear maps and dying in the same spots every other round.
Multiplayer That's rather the point, I dare say.
Summary Polished class-based warfare with a good selection of maps and settings. Ultimately grows boring after an extended period of play, as the maps are fairly linear and get predictable after a while.
Score 4.0/5.0
