The Datago boots up into Windows Media Center, which is basically Windows XP with an easy-to-use interface. Using the Remote Control or the arrow keys on the keyboard, you can scroll up/down and select various options such as My Videos, My TV or My Music. Clicking on the minimize button will send you back into the familiar traditional Windows desktop.

Everything works as you would expect on the traditional desktop. We installed several programs, from Snagit - which helped us take all these screenshots - to Microsoft Office. You can always get back to the Media Center front end by hitting the Windows logo on the remote control.

Front Panel Video

Since Windows Media Center uses the rear video inputs by default, you must manually choose to use any video device connected to the front panel. We connected a Mini-DV camcorder to the front Firewire port and then selected Front Panel Video on the Media Center screen.

You can preview the video input in real time. You can also record it for later playback. Basic video editing capabilities are provided with Microsoft Movie Maker, but for serious editing, you may want to install a beefier program.
