Cyber-soldiers in beta
Forty-four high-tech U.S. soldiers stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, are testing the kind of computerized battle gear we have gotten used to seeing in science fiction films. Though it is improbable that all information about the combat systems is being revealed, the military has released intriguing information. Weapons have thermal sights and, using eyepiece displays, can be aimed around corners or over barriers without exposing the user to enemy fire. Overlay maps of terrain linked to global positioning satellites can guide soldiers in combat situations, who are in touch with each other and their headquarters, where officers view video signals and other data coming from troops. Each soldier's main computer is packed in gel on a waist harness and battery packs are worn on each hip. War games between these computer-augmented and conventional troops are scheduled in September.
