CTIA 2006 Wrap-up: Phones, laptops and even some skateboarders

Los Angeles (CA) - Last week’s CTIA Wireless convention at the Los Angeles Convention center drew thousands of attendees and exhibitors. Companies showed off their latest phones, laptops and other electronics in a setting that seemed eerily like the Consumer Electronics Show or the now defunct COMDEX convention. The main focus of the CTIA Wireless convention is of course mobile phones. Several manufacturers including LG, Samsung and BlackBerry showed off their latest and greatest. Many of the phones included cameras and could also play music along with full-motion video.

In addition to phones, laptops were also shown. Panasonic had a large booth with several of their rugged Toughbook laptops. Company representatives showed us fully-rugged laptops that could withstand water splashes, 4-foot drops and even 200 pounds of compression. During the convention, Panasonic announced two new models of Toughbooks that have up to eight hours of battery life along.

Mobile game companies were also present and some gave quite a show. InfoSpace, a mobile game studio, and Activision announced a partnership to bring Tony Hawk skateboarding games to mobile phones and handheld devices. To slam the announcement home, InfoSpace brought in a full skateboard "half-pipe" and Tony Hawk himself to show off some moves.
