Crysis 2: PC and Consoles Compared in MP Demo

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

They can ALL play Crysis.

Crysis 2 was released this week and brought with it a player-driven first-person-shooting experience.

Unlike the first game, however, this sequel is on the consoles too. For those of you with a beefy enough PC, the choice is simple – go for the PC version. Playing a first-person-shooter is always better if you have the mouse option (though the couch comfort and big screen for consoles is nice too).

If you're unsure about the capabilities of your PC, then perhaps you'll have to settle for a console version. So far, judging from the multiplayer beta, the consoles have kept up really well – at least according to these comparison videos.

PC vs Xbox 360

PC vs PS3

PS3 vs Xbox 360

From all three different versions, it appears that the geometry is nearly identical. The main differences are in texture quality and lighting. Of course, multiplayer maps are tuned for speed rather than the "wow" effect, so stay tuned for a comparison of the campaign.

There are an awfull lot of us pc gamers these days that use a large screen (i.e 50") so we get all the benefits of the mouse and gfx + a big screen & a comfy settee

Well us die hard pc gamers do anyway lol

Check out the pier17 bathroom scene. The pc version has shadows on the sinks as both console versions show no shadows from the sinks :)

The geometry is near identical, but then it's not particularly complex geometry.

It's the full HDR lighting, shadows and environmental effects that just won't be on the consoles, and these comparisons show that.

Roll on the full campaign comparison.

Shadows, lighting, texture quality (go to 3:28 PC vs 360, that's a big difference in quality) and better draw distance. It just looks a lot nicer. PC ftw.

And how many XBOX consoles can you buy for a price of PC that can handle Crysis 2 on maximum settings?

Irrelevant. People spend money on PC gaming, and Crysis 2's maximum settings will be far, far greater than anything a console can handle.

If you're content playing on a console (and let's be honest, it's not like the consoles actually suck - they're very good for what they are) then all power to you. But some of us want full HDR on 5000-pixel wide surround gaming screens over 60fps, and we will pay 3 times the price of an Xbox to get a GPU that does it.

Having quite powerful PC on my desk I fully understand your point of view, but to be honest, most of the time I'm too busy playing to notice higher resolution of some wall texture. :)

i'll be honest i was expecting a bit more from the computer version; the differences aren't that great, not enough to warrent the extra cost at least.
this is getting typical of new games and constantly has me wondering why i bought all the expensive gear for my computer. it seems kind of a waste.

I'd say the differences are quite significant. Wait until the comparison of the single player game is out, then we'll see - multiplayer will always have simplified maps with reduced effects to keep the frame rates up and the gaming smooth.

While the initial cost of a PC is higher (A PC of about £700 would be fine for Crysis 2) the overall cost tends to work out the same because of having to pay £5 a month for the privilege of playing online and getting screwed over for an extra £10 - 15 a game on console

So Two games a month and and your subscription will be an extra £25 per month you pay extra because you bought a console over a period of 2 years that £600 you pay over and above a PC gamer, consoles are cheaper on initial purchase but over a couple of years they are more expensive

As many as you want, you'll never get 1080P @ 60FPS max though.
