Congress to probe Carnivore

Publicity generated by the FBI's Net surveillance system has prompted the U.S. Congress to look into the Carnivore program. This Monday, the House Judiciary Committee will investigate the e-mail monitoring system. Participants, besides the FBI, will include privacy and consumer groups, the American Civil Liberties Union and computer security organizations. As current U.S. surveillance laws were written with telephones in mind, legislators will consider major revisions to wiretapping laws. Earlier this week, the Clinton administration proposed its own version of Internet surveillance and privacy standards.
