Computex: XGI goes after home entertainment market with new Volari 8300

XGI, mainly known for its entry-level graphics cards, announced a PCI Express board targeting entertainment PCs (EPCs). The Volari 8300 supports DirectX 9, Shader Model 2.0 and integrates a 64-bit memory DRAM interface. Similar to Nvidia’s Turbo Cache, the 8300 is a shared memory solution and uses the available system memory to support garphics processing.

Video features include a TV encoder ; DVI output up to 2048 x 1536 ; 3:2 Pull-down for movies ; De-Interlacing ; High Quality Video Processor ; Motion Compensation and IDCT. XGI’s will remain a rare sight in North America, but become more visible through a distribution agreement with D&H.

The manufacturer said the 8300 will be available on graphics cards for PCs, but its limited performance capability and fanless design are likely to make the device most attractive for entry-level EPCs and notebooks. According to XGI, the 8300 supports Nvidia’s MXM type I design for simple integration in mobile computers. (THG)
