Computex: Gainward ups the Ante on GeForce2 MX 400
The new Golden Sample family of graphics cards from Gainward is based on the GeForce2 MX 400. Gainward is upping the ante with its products by supporting 64 MB of 3.3 nanosecond SDRAM, and will release cards running at 270 MHz memory clock speed. We tested versions of the GeForce MX 400 a few weeks ago at 240 MHz, but nVIDIA is forcing its board vendors to default to 200 MHz. Gainward, on the other hand, agreed to nVIDIA's terms after ensuring that their competitors would also stick to the rules, and not try to get a performance edge. That's pretty tough, so Gainward is shipping cards with a utility that allows the user to activate an "enhanced mode" for higher clock speeds. Of course, Gainward also guarantees that the enhanced settings will be reliable. This is one pushy graphics card. Get extended Computex show coverage by signing on for Tom's Hard Newsletter here .
