AMD Geode processors are cool to the touch
When you think of modern CPUs, you also think of high power consumption and high heat. AMD introduced their line of low wattage processors aimed at the PDA and laptop markets. Don't let the low wattages fool you - these are serious CPUs that can do serious tasks.
The Alchemy line of CPUs consume just 0.25 watts to 0.5 watts. The Alchemy AU 1550 consumes just 0.5 watts while running at 400 MHz, while the AU 1100 consumes 0.25 watts at 400 MHz. Both processors use the MIPS instruction set. The 1550 has an integrated firewall, which makes it perfect for routers and wireless access points.
The Geode GX533 consumes 1.1 watts running at 533 MHz. AMD demonstrated full Windows XP usability by running an Office benchmark and Windows Media player on the chip. Microsoft Office apps opened fairly quickly. The CPU runs cool enough so that it doesn't require a heatsink.
