Transmeta: Efficeon At 90 nm Now

by

The device on the right is the new 90 Nm Efficeon running at 1.6 GHz. As you can see, the die size has shrunk considerably in contrast to its 130 Nm brother. Also, we put the new 21x21 mm package onto the scene for comparison reasons.

Transmeta announced the availability of their Efficeon TM8620 in a new 21x21 mm OBGA package. Equipped with 192 kB L1 and 1 MB L2 cache and running at between 900 and 1100 MHz, the low power requirements still are the most attractive features of Efficeon.

In addition, 90 Nm versions running at 1.6 GHz were on display at Computex. Also, Transmeta is currently in the process of adding the NX bit feature to Efficeon, which is supposed to be finished over summer. Last but not least a new power management technology called LongRun2 has been added to the latest model.

This prototype system was running the new 1.6 GHz Efficeon and was equipped with only a heatsink. Transmeta sees huge demand for fanless solutions in the living room.

Efficeon is highly popular for blade server applications. These blades are fully featured computers that can be stacked on top of one another in a row, resulting in a total of 14 times 20 blades in a full-sized 19" rack with 42U.
