Compaq stops NT-on-Alpha development
Compaq Computer has laid off about 100 engineers who had been charged with porting Windows NT to the Alpha platform.
In addition, Wes Melling, former vice president of OpenVMS and NT integration at Compaq, has resigned.
The moves appear to signal a major shift at Compaq West, the former DECWest facility in Bellevue, Wash., where joint development with Microsoft focused on enhancing the NT kernel's clustering and 64-bit support.
The shift appears to support theories that Compaq has decided to focus on Linux, True64 Unix and OpenVMS as the preferred operating systems for its Alpha chips.
