Compaq ships "legacy-free" iPaq

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Compaq has begun shipments of the iPaq PC, the first "legacy-free" machine for the corporate market.

Priced at $499, the iPaq PC features a 500MHz Celeron chip, 64MB of RAM, a 4.3GB hard drive, a 24X CD-ROM drive and two USB ports - and no ISA bus. It uses Intel's 810E chip set, which includes an onboard graphics processing engine and 4MB of video memory.

Legacy-free PCs are designed to eliminate older computer technologies that add cost and complexity, making them easier to maintain and afford. Analysts predict such machines could eventually make up 80 percent of the PC market.
