Compaq gets genomics supercomputer contract
Compaq Computer Corp. will take four years to finish a supercompter with the help of Sandia National Laboratory and Celera Genomics Corp. The trio will develop software and hardware specifically for computational biology. By 2004, the computer is hoped to be capable of processing 100 trillion operations per second, which is eight times faster than the fastest supercomputer in operation today. Ultimately, the project is aimed at building a petaflop supercomputer capable of 1,000 trillion operations per second.
