Commodore Announces New Quad-core C64x Extreme
Haven't you heard that the 80's are back?
Earlier this year, Commodore released a modernized version of its Commodore 64 keyboard PC with Intel's dual-core Atom 525 CPU, Nvidia Ion 2 graphics, 2GB of DDR3 memory (expandable to 4 GB), an optical drive, and more. This week, the company revealed that it is now shipping production orders for the new Commodore 64 Extreme model, otherwise known as the C64x-EX.
The C64x-EX is perfect for Commodore fans that love the iconic Commodore design but want the extra oomph that the Atom-based model doesn't provide. Packing a 2nd generation Sandy Bridge 2.2Ghz 64-bit Intel core i7 (Quad Core/Eight Threads CPU [i7-2720QM]), the C64x-EX boasts a 2TB HDD, 8GB of RAM, 2 x USB 3.0 ports, 5 x USB 2.0 ports, 1 e-SATA port, SPDIF, HDMI, DVI and VGA display connections, a slot loaded R/W DVD drive, built in Ethernet and Wireless N Wi-Fi. As far as OS is concerned, the C64x-EXTREME comes with Linux Mint 11 and will dual boot with the "retro inspired" Commodore OS Vision when released.
Priced at $1499, this puppy isn't cheap, but you can't really put a price on nostalgia, can you? It's guaranteed to ship by Dec 15th if ordered before the 25th of this month, but Commodore says it has some recently produced C64x-EX units in stock that are guaranteed to ship within one business day.

yeah but its not an amiga :-(
i dont get why comidore keeps trying to do this... pc's arnt macs. you cant anounce that your making a pc then only offer a couple of low spec models for ridiculous prices and hope they sell... dont they know theres a recession on.
what we want is workbench. a workbench that is capable of running on any pc... currently there up to around 4.0 but you still only need a cd to install it...
Who'd have thought 30 years on and Commodore would initially release a computer slower than the original.
lols. yep 7mhz was blazing fast for the 68000 series... and if you wanted to overclock all you had to do was replace the timing crystal... anything up to 14mhz would work WOW! lol...
For those that want Amiga nostalgia on PC/Linux/Mac/iOS/Android check out http://aros.sourceforge.net/
the real issue is they are just making yet another wintel clone, a bad one in a pretty nice case and no one will buy. if Commodore was switched on, they would buy back the Amiga trademark and patents, buy Hyperion and A-Eon. then design a whole new Amiga computer based on PPC and custom chips and an up to date GPU gfx core, it will run Amiga OS4 and be as powerfull as an up to date windows gaming pc, fit that in a wedge case and keyboard and it will sell like hot cakes.. They could make 3 models 1 wedge home computer (A1200 style), an amiga workstation model, and Big Box pro model, aimed at CGI market.
as it stands there is a gap in the market.. right now u have games consoles for gaming, a lappy for internet social networking, and the few of us use desktop pc's for pc gaming.. the amiga was an all in one platform and many ppl in the 90's got into programming, CGI, desktop video, music making all from using the amiga (u cannot do that on ya consoles)and as for desktop pc's the ever changing market means unless u have a top end pc u cannot run the latest games? but maybe one day some one with capital will cotton on :-)

i agree with that, but i don't think a port of workbench to x86 would ba a good idea, the reason is that no one would install and or use it.. windows might be crappy bloatware from hell, but a) it works and b) 99.9 % of all the software u will ever use runs on it.. for workbench to be a viable operating system (which it is) it needs its own platform, imo and PPC based amiga would be it..
Apple Imo made the mistake in switching and porting Mac os to x86 when they ditched there PPc line of Imacs. now i won't argue it did make great business sence because rather than desinging and manufacturing a really good PPC based custom computer wich ran OSX they just took a monitor and made the Bezel bigger and crammed some cheap wintel based laptop parts arround it and sold it for the same price? now to me personally thats no longer an imac its a cheap laptop connected to a big monitor in a case that looks like an imac with a port of Macos running on it? now at the time i remember thinking "now ppl just gonna install windows on their new macs?" so to me they lost their Identity when they did that.. and that is reason why Workbench would need to be on a PPC based computer platform and not X86 In my humble opinion lol
