Clip-On Wi-Fi Captain Picard would be proud to use
"Picard to Bridge..." A Star Trek-type wireless network communication unit clips onto its wearer's clothing. At the touch of a button and upon speaking the name of a person on the network, the wearer is immediately connected with that person. About the size of an identification badge, this communication tool made by Vocera works through voice recognition software and a standard 802.11b wireless connection. Vocera expects these units to be used in hospitals, large stores and large industrial settings. E-mail text messaging can also be sent to the Vocera unit. The unit does not interfere with other electronic traffic, such as Internet connections to laptop computers. And to satisfy privacy advocates, the unit can be turned off into a "do not disturb mode." Vocera is still testing this unit, but estimates it will be available for sale in the near future.
