Click-and-sniff players merge

DigiScents, the U.S. company set to introduce a network-enabled aroma generator, is buying its primary competitor, the Israeli SenseIT. The combined company headquarters will stay in Oakland, California, while research facilities remain in Israel with close ties to the Weizmann Institute of Science. The firm's technology, set to hit stores next year, will use component aromas to build a theoretically unlimited number of complex scents that can be encoded and sent via the Internet or encoded into movies or other electronically stored content. According to a company spokesman, 1,600 video game developers have already signed up to use the odor technology in new games.
