Chipmakers prepare for USB v2.0
At the Intel Developer Forum, various chip sellers showed off products that will implement version 2.0 of the Universal Serial Bus, increasing digital transfer rates by as much as 40 times. This upgrade will dramatically improve the speed of activities that include CD recording and video transfer, and will allow external hard drive transfer rates higher than 400 Mbits/s.
Microsoft includes the USB 2.0 software stack in Windows 2000 and the Windows Millennium OS will support the standard. Intel says it will build motherboards implementing USB 2.0. Reportedly, other chipmakers are going to be supporting the standard before the end of the year and a wide variety of peripherals operating at the faster rate will be on the market soon.
