Chicago voters' data accidentally exchanges hands

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Chicago (IL) - CDs containing personal information about Chicago’s voters have gone missing from the city’s Board of Elections, with 1.3 million people now at risk for identity theft.

City spokesperson Tom Leach said that so far there is no evidence of any illegal use of the social security numbers. However, it does put another sour taste in the mouths of Chicago voters, after an incident back in October that exposed their social security numbers right on the Board of Elections website.

In total, over 100 CDs are not accounted for, which contain the names and addresses of over two million registered voters, with social security numbers of 1.3 million of those now out in the open.

The city has filed legal actions to try to recoup the discs. In the meantime, voters registered in Chicago can check the website re4m.org to see if their personal data has been compromised.
