As far as I'm concerned, the fewer gadgets I have to carry around the better. Anyone who's done any business travel knows that by the time you pack your cell phone, PDA, laptop, Game Boy, and MP3 player in your carry on bag, you're pretty much going to get a full body workout on the way to check in for your flight. Samsung's SPH-i300 doesn't combine the functions of all the gadgets you need, but at least it reduces your electronic baggage a bit by combining a PDA with a cell phone. While the it's been on the market since late October of last year, I haven't yet covered it in Hard News. Since Samsung is making a big deal of it over at CES , I figure there's no time like the present to give you the skinny on the device. The SPH-i300 phone has a large screen like a PDA and is fully compatible with Palm-OS-based applications. In addition to the 256 color display, it has a small top viewer (kind of like a pager) for information like caller ID, time, and roaming and power indicator. It offers wireless Internet connection and the ability to send and receive e-mail while on the move. Like the Palm, it has text input that provides writing recognition and a speakerphone for hands free conversation. The SPH-i300 features voice dialing of up to 20 numbers, speed dialing (up to 99 numbers) and a categorized phone book. Three emergency numbers can be placed in the phone, which can be accessed quickly by pressing a button. Caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding and three-way calling are also available. The PDA element of the SPH-i300 features handwriting recognition, an address book, scheduler, to-do list, memo pad, calculator, clock and PC synchronization. SPH-i300 also includes infrared communication and 8 MB of memory. The gadget weighs 170g with a standard battery and measures 125 x 58 x 21 mm. If they'd throw in an MP3 player, FM radio, and voice recorder, I'd be all over it if the price were right.
